September 17-19, Colorado Springs, CO.
For the first time in team history, Brown Cycling had a rider qualify for Collegiate Track Cycling Nationals. By winning the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Men’s B Category Finale, Kyle Helson (GS) earned an A upgrade and thus a qualifying slot for Nationals. Helson traveled to Colorado Springs to race at the US Olympic Training Center Velodrome, competing in the Flying 200 m, 1 km Time Trial, and the Scratch Race.
Helson established new personal best times in the 200 and the kilo, of 11.9 and 1:14 respectively. Unfortunately during the Scratch Race qualifying heats, a rider crashed into the rear of his bike causing him to unclip his foot with 2 laps to go. Racing in the Minor Scratch race final, Helson finished 17th.
Combining his results from the Scratch Race, 200 m, and Kilo, Helson finished 52nd overall in the Individual Omnium.
Despite racing by himself, Helson was joined by fellow Eastern Collegiate Conference (ECCC) riders from the University of Delware, West Point, and Penn State Lehigh Valley.
The experiences learned from Collegiate Track Nationals help prepare Helson for his overall goal of reaching USA Cycling Elite Track Nationals in July 2016, in Allentown, PA. Collegiate Track Nationals in 2016 will be held at the Giordana Velodrome in South Carolina.
The Brown Cycling team now looks to gear up to get dirty for the ECCC Cyclocross season and also start preparing for the spring ECCC Road Racing season!
